STM in Croatia

Published: January 15, 2021

In November 2020 the Croatian Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure contracted extension of the national Vessel Traffic Management Information System (VTMIS) with Sea Traffic Management functionalities.

A stand-alone system will be delivered by Maritech Adriatic and Wärtsilä Voyage in the first half of 2021, and will be the first introduction of route exchange in Croatian waters.  As part of the project, two vessels will be equipped with on-board route exchange capabilities.

The system will initially be set up in for Croatian VTS operators to test, and give feedback derived from specific traffic needs in the Adriatic Sea. The updated solution will be implemented in the VTMIS (Vessel Traffic Management Information System) extension phase, which is planned to be part of the EUREKA project, where several Adriatic-Ionian Maritime Administrations realize new VTMIS solutions.

Mr Zdravko Seidel

“STM is a new paradigm in maritime safety. In Croatia it would be used as an powerful tool for space and time management, traffic organization, SAR, just-in-time port optimizations, early detection and elimination of safety risks, analysis of maritime traffic data, with a huge future potential in management of hybrid traffic (SOLAS and non-SOLAS)“ stated Mr Zdravko Seidel, Head of Maritime Traffic Safety Department of Croatian Maritime Administration.

Mr Matko Maracic

“This project represents true value of technological advancement with proper use of information. This STM solution embraces changes needed in the industry by perfectly filling the gap between different stakeholders and correctly addresses today’s challenges in maritime transport by making shipping efficient, safe and environmentally friendly. We are extremely happy to be a part of the solution and this is a great impulse to keep up our work,” said Matko Maracic, CEO of MARITECH ADRIATIC, provider of STM in Croatia.
