Valenciaport Foundation presented the STM Validation Project

Published: November 10, 2016

Valenciaport Foundation presented the STM Validation Project in the 10th International Forum of Maritime and Port Safety. This tenth edition of the International Forum organized by Red PBIP Mexico was hold in Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) from 15th to 17th November. Its main goal was to review port and shipping safety aspects, as well as exchange information and successful experiences related to the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code implementation.

Conferences were structured into panels in which topics such as technology used in the maritime industry, strategies to reduce environmental impacts, the fight against drug trafficking and integral safety in the ship/port interface were discussed. Furthermore, port challenges for the future and regulations related ports and shipping safety were also approached.

Invited by the Forum organization team, Gabriel Ferrús participated in the panel of “Integral Safety in the efficiency of activities related to ship/port interface” where he presented the Port Collaborative Decision Making (PortCDM) concept. This concept is being currently tested in the framework of Sea Traffic Management (STM) Validation project, co-funded by the European Commission by means of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme. Its main objective is to support the development of efficient operations in port by means of sharing of intentions and actual states updates among stakeholders involved in port call processes. It will allow to improve port efficiency and optimize the use of resources and infrastructure. The involved actors in a port call process will be well informed and well prepared for their tasks, creating conditions for a smooth and seamless port call.

Nowadays the concept is being validated in 14 ports. Valenciaport Foundation is the responsible entity for coordinating its implementation in the ports located in the Mediterranean Sea, which are four Italian ports, three Spanish ports (Valencia, Sagunto and Barcelona) and the largest port in Cyprus (Limassol). The results of the test-beds executed until the end of the project in 2018 will prove the potentiality of the proposed concept.
