We are STM – Michael Bergmann, Senior Advisor, RISE Viktoria

Published: August 07, 2017

Michael Bergmann is the President of Comité International Radio-Maritime, CIRM, which is the principal international association for marine electronics companies, who bring individual companies together into a powerful collective body with an influential voice.
CIRM is one of the nine original international bodies accredited in 1961 as a non-governmental organisation in consultative status to the International Maritime Organization, IMO.

Interview

The STM Validation projects’ ingredients Voyage Management, Flow Management and Port Collaborative Decision Making (PortCDM) is about to be tested and validated in practice.
We sat down with the Secretary of the PortCDM Council, Michael Bergmann, and asked about the process of getting everyone onboard and sharing knowledge.

I am a software developer, who worked for more than 14 years on aviation navigation data and software, but since 2004 I am in the maritime domain, and for almost a year now, I have had the opportunity to support the STM project, representing RISE Viktoria. My experiences in both transport modes, allows me to contribute to the extraordinary talent pool of this project.

WHAT CAN MARITIME LEARN FROM AVIATION, MICHAEL?

I am excited that I now see concepts, previously developed in aviation, being evaluated and transformed so that the maritime domain can benefit. We are now moving from various concepts into a pre-implementation phase, and together with others in the STM validation project we see that we are creating real value for the shipping industry. It’s very rewarding to be part of the STM, where we migrate e-Navigation into reality.
With a background in the electronic industry, where solution focused projects are paramount, it hasn’t been any easy task to work with academia and governments, which usually have other focus in their every day jobs. However, developing the path towards implementation, together with the team, means to address valid concerns and to encourage team members to think outside the famous box, and that we have.

WHAT IS YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO THE STM VALIDATION PROJECT?

We have helped each other to understand, not from a language point of view, but from a thought process viewpoint, what our respective challenges are and how to move forward. My personal reward is being able to help and support my fellow team members to join with their specific talents, a partnership to improve safety and efficiency of maritime transport. I am excited to see the results!

Michael Bergmann is coming to the STM Validation Mid-Term Conference in Venice, Sept 12-13, why don’t you join?

Seeing is believing. #300ships
