Old school experts want new Tech – CESMA Annual meeting

Published: May 13, 2016

The Confederation of European Shipmasters’ Associations, CESMA, held their annual meeting at the Irish Institute of Master Mariners (IIMM) at the National Maritime College of Ireland in Cork May 12-13. Captain Ulf Svedberg of the STM Validation project was invited to speak about the project as well as about the safety and business benefits of STM.

Most of the participants are no longer active officers, but still very capable navigators.
-“The participants would not have a problem of whipping out the old sextant and bring the ship safely to its destination if needed. That is why it is so encouraging that they support the STM initiative whole heartedly. They agree that information sharing and services assisting the captain is the right way”, says Ulf Svedberg after the meeting.

The need for new technology and updated information sharing services within the maritime field was also reflected in the other speeches. Robert McCabe from the Nautical Institute mentioned STM several times, during his presentation, as the inevitable future, and welcomes it.

After the meeting the participants were offered to visit the IIMM.
-“A top notch facility with modern equipment, state-of-the-art simulators and inspiring personnel”, concludes Captain Svedberg.
